THE DIAMOND

THE RANKING SYSTEM

The diamond is a gem that is born in the bowels of the earth at a depth of more than 500 kilometers, where it grows and matures for a good billion years under enormous pressure and a temperature of more than 1000 degrees. It took frightening earthquakes such as volcanic eruptions or thrusts of the tectonic plate for this treasure from the heart of the earth to deign to join us on the surface.

It is still necessary for its lucky star to propel it intact at 250 km/h towards the surface without it transforming into a piece of graphite; After these tests, the diamond acquires an unequaled hardness.

Diamond professionals use the grading system developed by GIA in the 1950s, which established the use of four important factors to describe and classify diamonds:

purity,

color,

symmetry

 carat size.

PURITY:

All gems compete in their brilliance, but the diamond retains the advantage of an exceptional refraction of light which takes it to the firmament of brilliance, however this is hindered by the existence of impurities.

The purity of the diamond is registered on the following scale:

I -SI2 -SI1- VS2- VS1- VVS2- VVS1- FL- IF

FL and IF are pure diamonds, I indicates that impurities are visible to the naked eye.

Some diamonds however, have a FLUORESCENCE which can devalue its purity. This is why it is measured in addition to the purity on the following scale;

VS -S -M -FAINT -NONE (without any fluorescence)

COLOR:

The spectrum of diamond colors varies in infinite shades;

white, red, pink, green, blue or even black.

The most coveted is the transparent diamond without color, its quality is on the following scale: From Z to J these are colored diamonds.

 I -H -G -F -E -D (D being perfection) are no colored diamonds.

SYMMETRY:

Diamonds delight our eyes with a synphony of luminous sparkles that burst forth from all the facets. This burst must be distributed regularly over the entire diamond and to do this the regularity of the facets must be perfect.

This perfection is measured on the following scale;

P -F -G -VG -EX (VS means very good and EX excellent)

Even perfect symmetry would be insufficient if the facets were not polished like mirrors. This is why this POLISH is measured on an identical scale;

P -F -G -VG -EX

SIZE :

The size of the diamond is measured in "carat" indicated "ct". The carat translates the weight of the diamond. 1 carat weighs 0.20 grams. This word comes from the Arabic word quirat which designates the carob seed which had the extraordinary property of always weighing the same weight 0.20 gr and which was used in antiquity to weigh precious materials.

KIMBERLEY PROCESS:

The company SERGE VOLEVATCH JOAILLERIE adheres to the KIMBERLEY process and certifies that all its diamonds are extracted and cut from legal sources in compliance with United Nations resolutions which require suppliers to confirm the legitimacy of the sources.
